Helping Boys and Men improve their mental and emotional health in the North East of England.
ALBERT EINSTEIN
More likely to commit suicide and are less likely to seek help.
Experience a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, often stemming from what society expects and gender stereotypes.
These issues can lead to difficulties in coping, increased risk of substance abuse and risky behaviours, and a reluctance to seek help.
My experience as a counsellor has been mainly with boys and young men struggling with a range of issues.
•What Society expects:
•Traditional gender roles can lead men to suppress emotions and avoid seeking help.
•Shame and embarrassment
•Associated with seeking help for mental health issues, viewing it as a sign of weakness.
•Identity:
•Other identities like racial identity, sexual orientation, military status, and political affiliation can further impact a man's mental health.
•Depression:
•Can present as sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities.
•Anxiety:
•Can present as being generally anxious, anxiety, panic attacks, fear of social situations or phobias.
•Substance Abuse:
•May turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with stress or mental health issues.
•Other Issues:
•Conditions like ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and borderline personality disorder.
•The suicide rate for males in England and Wales increased to 17.4 deaths per 100,000 in 2023, this is the highest rate for males since 1999*.
•Males continued to account for around three-quarters of suicide deaths registered in 2023*

I’m Shaun, a qualified BACP registered, psychotherapeutic counsellor. I work in Gateshead. There I provide counselling to children, young people and adults who are experiencing a wide range of difficulties.
Being a counsellor has come as my latest and final career having worked in many roles over the years. I am someone who openly admits I need other people. I like to share feelings, knowledge and experiences, enriching both our lives. I am an interdependent, sharing life with others on others rather than independent. I embrace friendship and offers of support. I care for others and they for me.
My professional background is within education, safeguarding, child protection, homelessness, domestic abuse, fostering and criminal justice working with children from the age of 5 years through to older adults.
I use a variety of techniques to meet your needs, as there isn't just one therapeutic approach that can help you.
My approach is person centred and compassionate, focusing on the valued and unique individual with their own strengths and challenges.
It’s your counselling, your sessions, your goals and I look to help you or your child achieve them. For adults it’s about listening and talking focusing on what you want to achieve. For children it is often not as clear with work often involving play, creativity and observation. For both, with trust, together, we can work through the issues on a path to realising goals.
•For my clients I am alongside, witness to their journey helping them emotionally carry, empty or refill themselves into the future. My central principle is ethically meeting with another to help if able, ensuring no harm while looking to alleviate suffering and promote well-being.
•If the client’s needs are beyond my ability or if another would better serve a client I accept this and refer on.
•During the first session I will look to discover your concerns and issues and what you hope to achieve from your sessions. At the end, you can then decide if you want work with me. There is no obligation to continue.
